Fluid Garlands
About 400 wet-wipes have been pleated, naturally dyed and embroidered. By using wipes, with connotations of cleaning and childrearing, Kath explores feminist ideas around women’s domestic labour. She also hints at the difficulties of transitional times which women often find themselves in; the water, beetroot dyes and the dye from wasted raspberry tea her children have used suggests this fluid way of being.
The flower embroidery implies fertility and pollination and also the possibilities which come from being in an undefinable state. Many flowers are non-binary and although are symbols of excessive femininity, they are actually harder to categorise, and vastly more complex.
Central to this work are themes of sustainability and becoming more plant-like with our interactions with our planet.
